about
Meija’s single “Possum” features Eels, an indie rock mainstay across decades. The song's jangly rhythm meets the fuzzy guitars and production elements reminiscent of 90s alt rock greats. “Moving on is hard. We can all think that we’ve moved past something only for it to come again and still hurt the same. Time helps the healing but sometimes it’s not enough, you have to actually face it. POSSUM is a song about confronting your past, a promise to stop running" says Sierota. "When I was recording the vocals for the second verse, I had this idea for a call and response section. When I did the demo I was thinking of Eels as inspiration for the response vocals. I had this “far fetched" idea to try and see if I could get the song to them and see if they would be interested in doing it. Turns out we have a mutual friend, so I passed it along. I heard back from E and was thrilled to hear that he liked the song and was down to do it! Literally a dream come true!"
lyrics
I’ve been playing possum
Cause I want to survive
But if you really love something
You’ve gotta learn to learn to let it die
I wanna stop running
Wanna wring myself dry
Gonna pack up and take my whole body to the scene of the crime
I keep pulling the string, I keep fighting the sting
I keep putting it off but I’m tired of the same old thing
Oh ‘cause it’s always something
But don’t wanna burn my bridge entirely
I’ve gotta let go and see what comes out alive
Don’t wanna brace for nothing
I’m pulling the bandage off and let it bleed
You best believe that I’m done playing possum
I’m gonna let myself feel everything
Gonna let it blossom
Gonna let it cut deep
Fuck your “heart on your sleeve”
Gonna really feel something
Stop pretending that it’s just me
Wanna feel better
Do you wanna feel better?
I really wanna try
Go and let yourself cry
But I’m scared of the things that I’ve buried I might just find
