about
Los Angeles based meija expertly marries indie pop with alt grooves, never steering away from a big hook. The nom de plume of writer/producer Jamie Sierota, the name meija is an anagram of the letters in his first name. Previous to releasing music under this moniker, he toured the world with his siblings in the band Echosmith. Meija released his first full length album as a solo artist, titled Do Ya?, in 2023. As a solo artist, he’s explored analog and live recording, tapping into nostalgia while creating a sound that’s nuanced, layered and complex.
“Matador” is the latest release from meija. It starts simply, with vocal and guitar and as the lyrics unfold, the song turns to match the lyrical themes of the song. Sierota says “anger is an emotion that a lot of us want to avoid. It’s uncomfortable. Sometimes we get mad and lose the plot. Anger can come in waves or at unexpected times. But that’s the same for any emotion. I’m trying to learn to have a better relationship with anger.”
lyrics
I could feel it coming
I try but I can’t run from it
But the truth is I don’t even know what I’m gunning for
But I see red and you’re the matador
Try to keep it quiet
Don’t want to face or fight it
But it feels like the only place that I go
Everything that I know
Leads me to the same thing I keep thinking of
An anger that I never wanted to summon
And when I move on, there’s another one
So I try to let go of the feeling
But it’s hard when you can’t stop the bleeding
